What is Motability?

Motability helps disabled people to obtain a car simply by using their government-funded mobility allowances. For over 35 years, over 3 million customers have been able to exchange their allowance for a brand new car every three years or wheelchair accessible vehicle every five years along with a worry-free mobility package, including:
  • Insurance
  • Road tax
  • Servicing
  • Maintenance
  • Replacement tyres
  • Windscreen repair
  • Windscreen replacement cover
  • Full breakdown assistance

You can also nominate up to two named drivers for free, and a third for a small charge. Additionally, for those in need of them, many adaptations are available at no extra cost. The scheme is directed and overseen by Motability, which is a national charity that raises funds and awareness and provides financial assistance to customers who would be unable to afford the necessary equipment to keep them mobile.

The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair by exchanging their Government funded mobility allowance . If you receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme.

We provide the vehicle and the support you need so you can simply enjoy worry-free mobility. As part of our worry-free package, you can receive:

  • A new car every three years
  • Insurance from RSA Motability (RSAM)
  • Breakdown assistance
  • Servicing, maintenance and repairs
  • Adaptations, many at no extra cost

How It Works

1 - Choose your vehicle

When choosing a new vehicle, there is a lot to consider, including cost, suitability and fuel consumption. To make it easier to find a vehicle that best meets your needs. Our friendly specialist team are here to guide you through all those key considerations and help you make the right choice.

If you need a specific car because of your disability and you are unable to afford the Advance Payment required, or if you need essential adaptations or a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) which can sometimes cost more, Motability may be able to provide financial help.

Financial help is only awarded towards the least expensive solution that meets your mobility needs and you should also expect to contribute as much as you can afford.

2 - Search for dealers

Once you’ve worked out what’s important to you in a vehicle, the next step is to speak to us. You can discuss your preferred options with our fully trained Motability specialists and arrange a test drive. We can also discuss whether optional extras or adaptations might help make driving easier or more comfortable.

3 - Order your vehicle

Once you have decided which vehicle is right for you, our Motability specialist will complete your order with you using our simple online system. We will then send you an acceptance letter containing your Personal Identification Number (keep this safe as you need it to collect your vehicle). Before making your final decision we’ll advise the expected delivery time for your new car as this can vary from model to model. It could take a few weeks, but we will advise you in the event there are any delays.

* These cars are available at a fixed weekly amount for the whole of your lease agreement. The remainder of your allowance, including any annual increases, will be paid directly to you by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Veterans UK depending on which allowance you receive. It's the most affordable way to access a car on the Motability scheme. Advance Payment (AP) offers are valid for Motability applications between 1 January to 31 March 2019 and are correct at the time of publication. Motability customers agree to pay all or part of the Motability Allowance (DLA or WPMS) depending on their choice of vehicle, for the duration of their contract hire or hire purchase agreement. Offers valid from 1st January 2019 until 31st March 2019.
