Between January and March 2022, the sale of used electric vehicles has doubled in comparison to the same period in 2021!
Statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the number of electric vehicles purchased during the first quarter of 2021 was 6,600, whereas in 2022, it was 14,600. Not only this, but the increase in used Plug-In Hybrids increased by 35.5% and Self-Charging Hybrids by 28.8%.
This surge in the market for used electrified vehicles can easily be attributed to a number of factors, including the increase in cost of living, as well as the increased availability of used electric models coming to the market. With a wide array of options, from the latest generation Nissan Leaf, to the Hyundai IONIQ Electric, there are now plenty of models to choose from, with many achieving ranges upwards of 150 miles. Not only this, but many are realising the reduced long-term costs associated with owning an electric vehicle, because even though energy prices are rising, it is still generally cheaper to fuel an electric vehicle compared to a petrol or diesel. As the powertrain is so simple, it requires less maintenance and less parts to be replaced, which obviously reduces the cost of long-term ownership.
Should I buy a used Electric Vehicle?
Obviously, buying any used car is a big decision, choosing your favourite model, then finding the right example in your price bracket. Therefore, choosing a used electric model if you’ve never had one before could be even more daunting, with things like range anxiety and concern about where to charge and cost being top of people’s concerns. However, with over 37,000 public charging points, and more on the way as the government is in the process of investing billions into the infrastructure, these first to concerns in time should dissipate. Even so, you could feasibly own an electric vehicle and rely solely on home charging, without even having to install a home charge point, and be perfectly fine, whilst avoiding expensive trips to the petrol station. There is also a wide array of used models available, we currently have 38 models available, our cheapest being a 3-year-old Renault Zoe with just 15,373 miles, available for £15,750. When compared to none electric models, such as the Clio, there is a minimal price difference, meaning that most used models are just as affordable as petrol models.
Overall, the market has doubled already, and with the range of electric models continuing to grow, this is guaranteed to continue.
