Hyundai and Healthy Seas aim to extend their clean-up activities on a global scale as they renew their partnership for a third year.

Hyundai Conservation

Hyundai Motor and the marine conservation organisation, Healthy Seas have just entered into their third year of their partnership with a clean-up in Tossa de Mar – a highly polluted marine area in Costa Brava, Spain.

Both Hyundai and Healthy Seas are committed to shaping a more sustainable future by working together to combat marine pollution across different continents, with plans underway for four more clean-ups, as well as several educational activations.

Combating marine pollution in Costa Brava

Hyundai and healthy seas started their 2023 activities with a two-day clean up in Tossa de mar, Spain, from the 25th to the 26th April.

This was a significant event as both organisations, along with strong support from Ghost Diving Spain, have been working within this area together since the beginning of their partnership in 2021. Eight volunteer divers from the teams at Ghost Diving Spain and Ghost Diving Netherlands participated in this clean-up, with their main goal being to remove a large gill net that was covering a reef within the boundaries of a marine protected area.

Despite being lightweight, gill nets are considered the most lethal form of marine litter. Luckily, many marine organisms, particularly crustaceans, were saved from the detrimental impacts of the net during the operation.

Trammel nets, a broken crab pot, and many meters of log lines were also removed during this clean-up process.

On land, the volunteer team cut off the lead and ropes, and grouped the debris by type, so Healthy Seas can ensure that the recovered nets become a new resource. The nylon parts will be regenerated by Aquafil along with other nylon waste, into ECONYL yarn – the basis for many new products, such as the floor mats in Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models.
